PALEO HAMMOCK PRESERVE
On the first field trip of the season, seven participants were treated to good weather and some unusual species for Paleo Hammock, including Brown Thrasher and Sharp-Shinned Hawk.
Other birds of note were Painted Buntings, Pileated Woodpeckers, Great Crested Flycatchers and one Yellow-billed Cuckoo that perched for extended viewing by all. The group saw five Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, the most ever seen at Paleo Hammock, according to eBird records!
Participants also enjoyed some interesting butterflies including Ruddy Daggerwing, which uses Strangler Fig as a host plant. At the conclusion of the tour at Paleo Hammock, some of the group continued with a short walk around Teague Hammock. Many thanks to Tim Towles for leading the trip and sharing his expertise.
A full checklist of birds seen is available in eBird. Photos by Beth Hewitt, except as noted.
