FIELD TRIP REPORT, DECEMBER 8, 2018

A small but enthusiastic group of birders kayaked up the South Fork of the St. Lucie River in Stuart on Saturday December 8, 2018. The group went 6.4 miles round trip. It was quite an accomplishment to go so far, but the paddling was easy, it was just quite a long distance. Kudos to all the participants of this trip for fortitude and accomplishment. At the halfway point at a camp site, the group gathered at a picnic table and enjoyed lunch.

Twenty species of birds were seen. Two highlights were a yellow crowned night heron and a barred owl.

The group leaders were Roger LaLiberte and Kathy Mayshar. The trip was a great adventure in nature. The group saw a lot of big alligators and 12 small alligators all grouped on shore like a bunch of puppies. The mother was close by so the view was from a distance. There were beautiful water lilies and asters on shore.

Most of the trip was away from civilization. The banks of the St. Lucie River are natural and beautiful. It was a very different mode of transportation to bird by. The group enjoyed perfect temps and a nice light breeze. Many thanks go to Ed Stout of South River Outfitters for good directions, good equipment, and a great day of kayaking. It was a trip worth doing. Thanks to all who participated.
