DECEMBER, 2013, SLAS FIELD TRIP REPORT

Green Cay, Boynton Beach

Trip leaders: Hart and Jewel Rufe, Dorothy Schulz

After a last-minute decision to scratch the trip that was planned to Everglades National Park  ( Hart and Jewel were in the Everglades the day before the field trip and reported a disappointingly low number of birds ), eight birders joined up at Green Cay  at 8:15am for one of the best mornings we have ever had there.

The early morning light rain lifted within minutes of our arriving , and the overcast sky made for pleasant birding conditions. A special treat was a Merlin that flew in while we were watching and spent the entire morning sitting on a post in the middle of the wetland, much to the delight of the photographers.

We left the wetland shortly after noon and headed over to “Sweet Tomatoes “ restaurant for a great lunch and conversation. That stop has become a tradition on the Green Cay trip!
